Course Information

This course will provide you with opportunities to develop your knowledge, awareness and skills to address generic pedagogy practice including lesson structure, Assessment for Learning, questioning, differentiation. Other topics covered in the General Teaching Practice (GPS) part of the course include Special Educational Needs (SEN), English as an Additional Language (EAL), managing behaviour, Child Protection and Health & Safety.

Being based in the lead and partner schools will allow you opportunities to fully embrace the wider school community. You will be able to participate in extra-curricular activity and lead in innovative projects that impact on child development and student attainment. These experiences will give you broad portfolio to prepare you for the next step in your teaching career.

We want you to become an enthusiastic and inspiring teacher, and a curriculum innovator of the future. To ensure your own development is fostered, we also build in regular review points and an enrichment experience, where you could be developing resources for your future teaching career.

Assessment

Course modules include:

The modules are assessed in various ways—on the quality of your planning, teaching and evaluation, through written assignments on your subject specialism and education, by passing the Teaching Agency skill tests—but assessment is always rooted in what you do in the classroom.

Art & Design

Do you have passion for visual arts? Do you want to enthuse young people to appreciate and create art? Then this is the course for you.

This comprehensive programme is delivered by committed, experienced and supportive teachers and offers clear opportunities to develop your subject knowledge. You will learn all the skills you need to teach art and design effectively, from the basics of structuring and planning lessons through to developing personal skills and confidence.

English

Are you passionate about the English language? If it's your dream to impart your knowledge and love of English on to a new generation as a secondary school English teacher, then this is a great place to start.

On this course you are taught by a team of outstanding teachers who have a proven track record of mentoring trainee teachers in English.  They will guide you through English teaching and share with you a variety of approaches, focusing on active learning and critical thinking in English.

Geography

If your ambition is to teach geography at secondary school then this is the course for you.

On this course you are taught by a team of outstanding teachers who have a proven track record of mentoring trainee teachers in geography.  They will guide you through geography teaching and share with you a variety of approaches approach such as games, simulations, using videos, sustainable development, teaching about the weather, climate change and map work.

History

Mathematics

Are you passionate about mathematics? If your dream is to become a mathematics teacher at secondary school, then this is the course for you.

The school direct programme in secondary mathematics is designed to develop your confidence in mathematics along with your ability to help young learners understand and appreciate the beauty of the subject.

On this course you are taught by a team of outstanding teachers who have a proven track record of mentoring trainee teachers in mathematics.  They will guide you through mathematics teaching and share with you a variety of approaches to build young peoples’ confidence in mathematics and show them its applications in life, while enhancing your own appreciation of its power.

Modern Foreign Languages

Are you passionate about languages? If it's your dream to impart your knowledge and love of languages on to a new generation as a secondary school history teacher, then this is a great place to start.

On this course you are taught by a team of outstanding teachers who have a proven track record of mentoring trainee teachers in modern foreign languages.  They will guide you through language teaching and share with you a variety of approaches. You will discover how pupils learn, what motivates them and how to give them the tools to say what they really want to say; and how to do all this in the target language.

Music

Empowering young people to harness their own creativity can make a huge impact on their life, it gives them confidence to succeed. Sharing your skills and passion for music can be fulfilling and rewarding for you, but it can also make a difference by inspiring young people. You can encourage appreciation of music and spark their interest in listening, performing and composing music.

On this course outstanding teaching staff will share good practice and professional values with you. They will guide you in exploring and developing teaching methods in all areas across Key Stages 3,4&5 spanning ages 11 to 18. You will secure the skills you require for the classroom, from the development of learning and teaching programmes to promoting musicianship and performance in schools.

PE

Do you hold a passion for sport? Are you a talented sports person who would love to share your enthusiasm with young people? Then this is the course for you. We recognise that Physical Education has an important role to play in contemporary society. It provides a means of promoting healthy lifestyles and positive attitudes to exercise to children, both at school and throughout life. It has the potential to develop an appreciation of skilful and creative performances across a wide range of physical activities. It can contribute to the development of problem solving skills and the establishment of self-esteem through the enhancement of physical confidence. Physical activity should be combined with the cognitive processes involved in making decisions and selecting, refining, evaluating and adapting skills and movements. If you share these values and beliefs, teaching physical education can be enormously rewarding.

The course is structured to develop the skills required to teach across the spectrum of activities in the National Curriculum for physical education, with trainees acquiring the knowledge, skills, understanding and professional standards necessary to teach pupils within Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and beyond.

RE

Religious education is essential to the basic secondary school curriculum and it plays an important part in the personal, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of young people. This is a particularly exciting time to be teaching religious education, with the new national framework raising its status in schools.

We aim to help you translate your enthusiasm for the subject into practical skills, so you can make Religious Education exciting and relevant for the young people you teach. We also aim to develop your skills so that you become an innovative professional, able to make a valuable contribution to the development of the subject in the future. To provide you with examples of good practice, the course draws on a broad range of teaching and learning strategies, including workshops, presentations, lectures, seminars, group work, problem solving, ICT workshops, independent study, videos, visits, hands-on practical work with artefacts and resources, individual tutorials and mentoring sessions.

Science

If you want to embark on a fulfilling career as a secondary computer science and ICT teacher, then this is the course for you. Our school direct programme can provide you with all the tools needed for a successful career.

Computer Science and ICT in schools is going through one of the biggest changes it has ever seen. As a potential new teacher coming into this area, this is a very exciting time.

You will be supported by a specialist team of ICT teachers, mentors and university lecturers you as you learn how to plan, resource and deliver effective lessons to pupils across the ability range. You will gain knowledge and understanding of the new Computer Science curriculum, GCSE courses and Btec courses at level 2 and 3.
